New Delhi: England thrashed West Indies by 241 runs in the second Test at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Monday to bag their second win on the trot and seal the three-match series with an unassailable 2-0 lead. The hosts rode on magnificent tons from Joe Root and Harry Brook to post 425 runs on the board in their second innings and set up a 385-run target for the visitors.
In reply, West Indies were bundled out on a paltry 143 runs after young spinner Shoaib Bashir ran riot with the ball. Playing only his fifth Test for the hosts, Bashir spun a web around the West Indies batters as he finished with a five-wicket haul to help England pull off a comprehensive victory. Bashir was well supported by pacers Chris Woakes and Gus Atikinson, who picked up two wickets apiece.
The massive win saw England climb to the sixth spot from the bottom of the table in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle. It was a huge jump for the hosts, who were languishing at the bottom ahead of the start of the series. Back-to-back victories against West Indies have put England back in contention for a spot in the top two, though their chances of making it to the final are still bleak.
England are at the sixth spot with five wins from 12 matches and 45 points to their name. Their win percentage stands at 31.25 which keeps them below Pakistan, who are in the fifth spot currently. With one Test remaining in the series, England have a chance to further close the gap at the top in the WTC points table.
