New Delhi: Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has confirmed his commitment to his current role in Tyneside stating he is dedicated to the club and will continue as manager as long as he’s happy at the club and feels supported. His statement comes in light of Gareth Southgate’s recent resignation as manager of the England national team, leading to the Newcastle manager being linked with the newly vacant role.
It is expected that the English FA will only consider homegrown options as the search for the next England manager continues. Former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino was seen as a perfect fit for the role but the homegrown criteria that the FA is sticking with should see him be ruled out of the running for the role.
Both Howe and former Chelsea manager Graham Potter were seen as front-runners for the role but Howe’s decision to pledge his commitment to the club might force the FA to look at other options as well.
The Newcastle manager said in an interview with BBC Radio, “For me, as long as I am happy and feel supported and feel free to do the work that I love to do at Newcastle, I’ll be very happy – and I am very happy.” I’m absolutely honoured and privileged to be manager of Newcastle.” He would go on to admit his ambition of winning a trophy for the club and how he reminds himself of the same every day.

The English FA publicly advertised the head coach job last Friday, seeking applications for the vacant role on their website’s career portal. The description for the kind of candidate they want gives away what the FA is looking for in their next manager. Having failed to win any tournament since the 1966 World Cup triumph, the FA are looking for a coach that can lead the Three Lions to ‘win a major tournament.’ This comes after the national team lost two consecutive UEFA Euro finals under Southgate.
In addition to getting a winner, they also want someone who has significant experience in English football and a strong record of results in the Premier League or other leading international competitions. Curiously enough, both Howe and Potter, two of the widely expected favourites don’t match the entire criteria listed down by the English FA. Not only these two but there also isn’t any English manager currently that can be considered a ‘serial-winner’ or has a consistent record in the Premier League.
The deadline for the applications set by the FA is August 2, 2024, before the UEFA Nations League begins in September of this year.
