New Delhi: Romania’s long jumper Florentina Iusco will miss the Paris Olympics after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) partially upheld an appeal by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) after she tested positive for a banned substance (furosemide) during an out-of-competition doping control in April last year.
The analysis of her A and B samples tested positive which led to an anti-doping rule violation. On February 1, Romania’s National Anti-Doping Organisation sanctioned her only with a reprimand with no period of ineligibility, under the argument that she was not at fault or was not negligent.
However, the WADA challenged that decision in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Upon review, the Court found that she had failed to exercise the standard of care required for a ‘no significant fault or negligence’.
CAS imposed a two-year ban on Iusco effective from February 1 and all her results from April 23, 2023, onward have been disqualified. Initially, WADA sought a two-year ban starting from the day CAS made its decision, but the ruling nonetheless stands as a big setback for her and she will be unable to compete in the upcoming Paris Olympics.
The president of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee, Mihai Covaliu also issued a response to the ruling of Iusco’s case and said that the regulation is for everyone and must be respected.
“This is the regulation for everyone and no one deviates from it, because it must be respected according to the letter of the law.”
“Absolutely, it brings a shadow of sadness over today’s event, but we cannot deviate from the rules. The regulation is the same for everyone regardless of name, whoever breaks the rules does not get on the plane for the Paris Olympics. We at COSR were also notified of this case officially” he added.
He also said that all the athletes have been tested and in any case, if there is a trace of suspicion or any other mistake sanctioned by the regulations, those athletes will not get on the plane to Paris.
