Filip Jørgensen to Chelsea: Enzo Maresca closing in on new goalkeeper ahead of the 2024/25 season

New Delhi: After the news recently emerged that the club will be looking to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window, it looks like Chelsea have acted quickly to wrap up a deal for Villareal’s 22-year-old stopper, Filip Jørgensen. Manager Enzo Maresca likes to play a Pep Guardiola-esque brand of football, having learnt under the Spanish mastermind and having a goalkeeper that fits his system is imperative. He prefers to have a goalkeeper who is adept with the ball at his feet as that is extremely important to the way he likes his teams to play.

Speaking in an interview after the 2-2 pre-season friendly draw with Wrexham, Maresca said, “For sure, the way we want to play, the goalkeeper is very, very important – one of the main positions.” Chelsea have Djordje Petrovic and Robert Sanchez on the books who split the first-team responsibilities between them last season but neither of them is suited to Maresca’s style.

This led the club to begin their hunt for a new shot-stopper and that search led them to Spain, where Filip Jørgensen shone extremely brightly for Villareal last season. The 2023/24 campaign proved to be a breakthrough campaign for the goalkeeper which saw him become the club’s first-choice keeper, keeping six clean sheets and making a whopping 143 saves all season, more than anyone else in La Liga.

Apart from being an excellent shot-stopper, what drove Chelsea towards the Danish goalkeeper is that he is an excellent modern-day, ball-playing goalkeeper. The club have already agreed personal terms with the Dane and the deal with Villareal is said to be at the final stage of completion. The fee is expected to be around €20 million with add-ons and both clubs are now discussing the structure of the deal according to reports on social media.

With Jørgensen set to sign for the club, there will be an abundance of goalkeepers at Stamford Bridge. In addition to Petrovic and Sanchez, the club also has Gabriel Slonina, who is away on national duty, Marcus Bettinelli, Lucas Bergstrom, and Eddie Beach all of whom are in the squad for the pre-season tour of the USA. Surely the club has to move on at least three of these goalkeepers either on loan or permanently, considering Jørgensen is also only 22.

The Dane’s move to Stamford Bridge once finalized, will make him the eighth signing of the season after Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Omari Kellyman, Renato Veiga, Caleb Wiley, Marc Guiu, Tosin Adarabioyo, and Estevao Willian- who joins the club next season.

Chelsea have dipped into the transfer market once again to solve their goalkeeping woes and have set their eyes on the young Villareal goalkeeper.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
