New Delhi: With the much-awaited opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics 2024 reaching its conclusion, the day has officially arrived when the 205 participating nations kick off their campaigns at the Summer Games in the French capital. The opening ceremony was a rousing and glitzy affair as athletes from each country got on their respective boats and sailed along the Seine River, a first and one-of-its-kind venue for the opening ritual.
India was slotted 84th on the call list that contained each nation participating in the ceremony’s traditional “Parade of Nations.” The Indian contingent was led by two-time Olympic medallist shuttler PV Sindhu and veteran paddler Achantha Sharath Kamal. The women in the contingent were draped in sarees, while the men donned the traditional ‘kurta-pajama’ in the colours of the national flag.
India will be represented by a 117-member delegation at the Games out of which 47 are female. Although at the ceremony, a total of 78 members including the athletes and the staff members were present to partake, while the rest prepared for their nearing fixtures and some yet to arrive in the city of love.
Nonetheless on Day 1, India have a plethora of events coming up on their way and it will be starting with the shooters who will be up in their qualification rounds. Arjun Babuta-Ramita Jindal, Arjun Singh Cheema, and Manu Bhaker are notable competitors and a men’s hockey match against New Zealand is also scheduled for the latter half of the day. The likes of Satwik-Chirag, Lakshya Sen, Balraj Panwar, Harmeet Desai, Rohan Bopanna, and N Sriram Balaji will all begin their campaign on Saturday.
