Manu Bhaker in fray for 2nd Olympic medal: When is her match & who is her biggest hurdle?

New Delhi: After scripting history by becoming the first woman to win a shooting medal for India at the Olympics on Sunday, Manu Bhaker will be eyeing a second medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. The 22-year-old shooter bagged India’s first medal at the Paris Games by bagging a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air rifle final.

She will now be fighting for a second medal in the bronze medal match in the mixed team 10m air pistol event at the Paris Games. Manu and Sarabjot Singh qualified for the bronze medal match in the mixed team 10m air pistol event after finishing 3rd in the qualifying round on Monday. The Indian mixed team pair finished with a score of 580 to secure third place in qualification.

Manu will have a chance to create history once again as she can become the first Indian athlete to win two medals in a single edition of the Olympics. No Indian has ever won two medals in the same edition of the Olympics. Manu and Sarabjot will be hoping to add another medal to India’s tally when they compete in the bronze medal match on Tuesday.

All you need to know about Manu Bhaker’s 2nd medal match at Paris Olympics:

Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh will take on the South Korean pair Oh Ye Jin and Lee Wonho in the bronze medal match of the mixed team 10m air pistol event on Tuesday, July 30. The final will be played in Chateauroux, France. The bronze medal match between India and South Korea will begin at 1 PM IST.

Turkiye and Serbia will compete in the gold medal match of the mixed team 10m air pistol event after finishing in the top two spots, respectively.

Who is Manu Bhaker’s biggest hurdle in the bronze medal match?

Manu and Sarabjot will have to be wary of the Korean pair of Oh Ye Jin and Lee Wonho in the bronze match. South Koreans have traditionally dominated in shooting at the Olympics and Paris 2024 has been no different. South Korea have already won 7 medals at the Paris Games out of which 4 have come in shooting, showcasing their incredible prowess in the sport.

Oh Ye Jin and Lee Wonho were favourites to qualify for the gold medal match during the qualifying round of the mixed team 10m air pistol event on Monday but the pair had an off day and finished 4th. Nonetheless, they will start as favourites in the bronze medal match against India.

Manu’s biggest hurdle in the bronze medal match will be her direct opponent Oh Ye Jin, who won the gold medal in the individual women’s 10m air pistol event where Manu finished with a bronze. Oh Ye Jin dominated the proceedings in the individual final where she won the elusive gold medal after scoring 243.2 to set a new Olympic record.

Manu and Sarabjot will have to be on top of their game if they are to beat the South Korean pair and take another medal for India in shooting at the Paris Games.
