Premier League: Can Manchester United break their Anfield duck against Liverpool?

New Delhi: Ruben Amorim takes charge of his first Manchester United-Liverpool game as the Red Devils visit the home of the Reds as this age old rivalry gets rekindled tonight in extreme weather. Sometimes referred to as the Northwest derby, this game is considered to be one of the biggest fixtures in English football and is seen as one of the biggest and fiercest rivalries in world football altogether.

These are the two most successful clubs in English football with a combined 39 league titles and nine UEFA Champions League titles between them. However, since the turn of the century, both teams have gone through their own periods of transition. It was Liverpool who went through a difficult period between at first between 2009 and 2015 before Jurgen Klopp came over and turned their fortunes around.

Now, it’s Manchester United who have been going through a tough phase. It started after the retirement of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson but with the arrival of Jose Mourinho, it seemed like United can finally build with the Portuguese at the helm. Since the departure of the Special One though, things have become even worse for the Red Devils and they’re currently going through their worst season in Premier League history.

Both teams are in contrasting form with Liverpool running away with the league, sitting firmly on top with a five point lead and two games in hand. Manchester United, on the other hand, have been in terrible form heading into the game having lost four leagues games in a row and find themselves in the 14th position in the league table. Will they be able stop their rut against their old rivals or will Liverpool run away with another dominant victory?

Anfield has been a tough place to visit for Manchester United in these past few years. The Red Devils hold the advantage in this rivalry as a whole with 29 wins in 65 Premier League games compared to Liverpool’s 20 but their record at Anfield in almost the last decade has been nothing short of woeful. The club’s last win at Liverpool’s iconic home ground came in January of 2016, stretching their winless run there to nine long years.

Since Wayne Rooney’s strike separated the two sides in January 2016, Manchester United have failed to win a single game at Anfield. In the eight matches that have taken place at the stadium in that time, United have drawn four and lost four. What makes this run of form even worse is that in these eight games, United have conceded a whopping 16 goals against Liverpool and have scored just one.

That solitary goal at Anfield also came over six years ago when Liverpool ran out as 3-1 winners over their arch rivals in December 2018. While United didn’t travel to Anfield in 2024 in the league, they did so twice in 2023, and suffered an embarrassing 7-0 defeat in March 2023 at the hands of Liverpool. The Reds even won the reverse fixture earlier in the season 3-0 and they could very well repeat the same result tonight.

Manchester United travel to Liverpool this evening to face off against their old rivals at Anfield but the Red Devils haven’t enjoyed much success at Liverpool’s home ground off late. Can they change that tonight?  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
