After Paris Olympics silver medal, British swimmer Adam Peaty tests positive for COVID

New Delhi: A day after claiming silver in the 100m breaststroke at Paris Olympics, British swimmer Adam Peaty tested positive for Covid.

He felt a bit under the weather during the 100m breaststroke event as he finished 0.02 seconds behind Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi, sharing the silver with America’s Nic Fink.

The 29-year-old he was unwell since waking up on the day of the race though he didn’t forward it as an excuse for failing to win the gold even when he struggled to speak with a sore throat.

He hopes to be return to compete for the relay events later in the competition, a Team GB statement said.

“Adam Peaty began feeling unwell on Sunday, ahead of his men’s 100m breaststroke final. In the hours after the final, his symptoms became worse and he was tested for COVID early on Monday morning. He tested positive at that point,” the statement said.

“He is hopeful to be back in competition for the relay events later in the swimming programme. As in any case of illness, the situation is being managed appropriately, with all usual precautions being taken to keep the wider delegation healthy.”

Peaet is the two-time 100m champion came up 0.02 secnds short as Martinenghi emerged out of the thrilling race as a surprise winner.
