Coimbatore: Two persons died in a landslip at Sholayar near Valparai in Coimbatore district in the early hours of Tuesday. A man died after his house collapsed at Gomangalam near Pollachi. District administration declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Valparai taluk on Tuesday, July 30.
Two were killed on the landslide
Rajeshwari and her granddaughter live in a house on the left bank of Sholaiyar Dam. The night rain caused a landslide and rock and soil fell on the house and the wall collapsed. Both grandmother and granddaughter died in the debris caused by the landslide, according to reports.
People who came to the area early in the morning saw the landslide and informed the police. The police and fire department rescued the bodies stuck between the stones.
It has been raining heavily since yesterday morning in Valparai of Coimbatore district. Due to this heavy rain, landslides have occurred at various places. Also, trees fell on electric poles at night and there were power outages in several places.
Flooding in rivers
Heavy rains in Valparai have caused flooding in rivers. Especially the water level of the Sholaiyar dam has increased. As a result, Solaiyar Dam has been opened at 4 am today. It is noteworthy that 19 centimeters of rain have been recorded in the Solaiyar area in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Six bodies have been recovered and hundreds are feared to be trapped as two massive landslides hit Meppadi village in Kerala’s Wayanad. According to sources, the first landslide struck the area at nearly 2 am. Later, at nearly 4.10 am, the district was struck by another landslide. The state and national disaster relief forces have been deployed and rescue operations are currently underway.
