New Delhi: According to a new study, an active ingredient found in weight loss drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic, known as semaglutide, can do lot more than help you lose the extra kilos. Turns out, this active component can help people quit smoking as well. According to a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine on Monday, the component is linked to lower risk of tobacco use disorders, this also includes counseling and reduced smoking cessation prescriptions. For this, researchers compared new users of anti-diabetes medicines like semaglutide and seven other forms of the same.
How do weight loss drugs help quit smoking?
Researchers involved 222942 participants and they all were suffering from tobacco use disorder and the study’s findings suggest that most of the differences within only 30 days of using the medication. Although it is early to recommend weight loss drugs to stop smoking, the study’s findings stress the need for more research in the area to justify the potential of weight loss drugs.
Experts noted that it is a first time that researchers established a link between Ozempic and Wegovy for managing hunger pangs and lowering cravings as well. Some of the doctors and patients also dimissed alcohol and nicotine cravings as an unexpected side effect. Researchers and patients saw that this releases dopamine, the feel-good hormone which is usually released after one engages in certain activity like exercising or drinking alcohol. Nicotine use can also have the same effect.

Ozempic works by lowering the surge of dopamine, thereby lowering desire to engage in a particular activity. This also goes for eating and smoking. Experts said that these drugs are not all health benefits, there are some downsides as well. According to experts, weight loss drugs can lead to the skin loosening, heartburn and fatigue to name a few. Furthermore, the side effects can aggravate when one stops using the drugs suddenly.
