New Delhi: Pakistan Cricket Board could appoint former skipper Waqar Younis as director of its cricket affairs.
The PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi is reported to be keen on a former players handling all cricket-related matters.
Thus Younis has emerged as the front runner as Naqvi wants to follow other cricket boards to appoint a former player.
“Waqar Younis is a top candidate to be handed over complete responsibility of looking after men’s cricket, including liaising with the two foreign head coaches, national selectors and domestic cricket departments,” a PCB source told PTI.
Former pace ace will be in charge of managing the men’s cricket team’s affairs while other former players would also be consulted for specific matters.
“Naqvi doesn’t want to centralise all powers as he wants to decentralise things, especially where cricket issues are concerned. In future, even international cricket schedules and issues would be looked over by the director of cricket,” he added.
The PCB is now fully engaged in hosting the Champions Trophy next year. Pakistan remain keen to host the tournament in its entirety while they await India’s nod to play in their soil.
India had refused to play in Pakistan in last year’s Asia Cup and might again do that, which would force the International Cricket Council to adopt a hybrid policy with some matches held in either the UAE or Sri Lanka.
“Being the federal interior minister, Naqvi believes that it is only fair that all cricket matters are handled by specialists and not only people in administration,” he added.
Younis, 52, has earlier worked as head coach and bowling coach of the team in separate stints. He would have the powers to hire other former players to assist him.
Younis is now settled in Australia with his family but is believed to be available to work for the national team.
