New Delhi: Cristiano Ronaldo notched his 900th career goal during Portugal’s Nations League clash against Croatia on Thursday at home at Estadio da Luz in Lisbon. Ronaldo’s goal helped his side go 2-0 up in the 34th minute. From a close range, the 39-year-old tapped a Nuno Mendes cross and achieved the feat.
The Portuguese star appeared emotional in his celebration of reaching the milestone, having failed to score his country in his last five outings with the team. With that, he also has found the back of the net 131 times for Portugal. For over two decades now, Ronaldo has impressed the world with his goal-scoring excellence, having scored a brace for Sporting CP in 2002 at 17, his first goal at the senior level.
Ronaldo’s goals with clubs
He scored a total of five goals with Sporting CP before finding himself in the Premier League when he joined Manchester United. During his first stint for the Red Devils, he scored 118 from his 293 appearances. He then found his way in La Liga, joining Real Madrid in 2009. For Los Blancos, he piled up 450 goals from just 438 games. Moving to Italy for Juventus in 2018, he managed 101 goals across 134 games.
His next destination was going back to his Premier League team, Man United, in 2021 and added 27 goals from 54 games. However, the move didn’t work well, and Ronaldo moved to the Saudi Pro League with Al-Nassr and has already scored 68 goals for the side.
Has Ronaldo scored the most number of goals?
As men’s football lacks a central database, determining who the leading scorer is has been an issue. However, Ronaldo is leading the chart in the official goals of the top level of football when he surpassed 800 goals during his second stint with Manchester United. Though Brazil legends Pele and Romario have claimed to score more than 1,000 goals, after excluding friendlies, the numbers dropped sharply. According to reports, Pele has scored 778 goals in his name, and Romario scored 785 goals.
Ronaldo’s rival, Lionel Messi, has a total career goal of 867 goals. Recently, Ronaldo has commented on his wish to complete a thousand goals and end his career at his current football club in Saudi Arabia.
