Divided by borders, united by sports: North-South Korea Olympic selfie grabs umpteen attention

New Delhi: Sports only does not keep you fit but it’s touted to play a pivotal role between people where animosity has taken over all the other emotions. Where the people are divided by borders and different thought processes, a sporting stage acts as a medium to unite them, at least to a certain extent.

Something of similar sort was vividly visible on the Paris Olympics podium, where athletes from two enemy states united for a while over a casual selfie. In a rare display of cross-border unity, athletes from North and South Korea became one, albeit for a while, on the Olympic stage where they happily posed for a selfie together.

After South Korea won bronze medal and North Korea bagged silver in the mixed doubles behind China, South Korea’s Lim Jong-hoon took a group photo after the medal ceremony, which quickly went viral on social media. North Korea’s Ri Jong Sik and Kim Kum Yong, the South’s Shin Yubin and the victorious Chinese team Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha all beamed into Lim’s phone for the rare selfie.

North Korea declares South principal enemy

Due to the escalating tension between the two neighbouring countries, a friendship does not seem to appear on the cards. Earlier this year, North Korea, which is considered to be a heavily nuclear-armed nation, declared South as its principal enemy after tensions took to another level this year. Meanwhile, it seems that the athletes from both the nations don’t second the decision and created headlines by clicking a pic in one single frame.

Images of Olympic table tennis players from North Korea and South Korea taking a selfie together on the medal podium grabbed the attention of many, with people hailing the rare display of affection in true spirit of the Olympics.
