New Delhi: Angel di Maria, claims that threats of murder have made him change his mind about going back to his childhood club, Rosario Central. After moving away from Benfica at the end of the previous season, the 36-year-old became a free agent. Earlier this month, he announced his retirement from international football after Argentina won the Copa America. After working for Rosario Central for two years, from 2005 to 2007, Di Maria desired to finish his career there.
However, he was compelled to reconsider after receiving several threats against him and his family, which he chose not to disclose out of fear. The Argentine claimed that Di Maria’s sister’s business had received a threat, that there was a box with a pig’s head and a bullet wound to the forehead, and that there was a note stating that his daughter Pia’s head would be the next to be found if he went back to Rosario Central.
Before moving to Real Madrid, Di Maria spent three years at Benfica after leaving Rosario for the Portuguese team in 2007. He came to Manchester United in a then-British record £59.7 million transfer after four years in the Spanish capital, although he only stayed in the northwest for 12 months before being sold to Paris Saint Germain. Prior to spending a season with Juventus and subsequently joining Benfica in 2023, Di Maria spent seven years with PSG.
