New Delhi: Former India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s future in the Indian Premier League has been the topic of discussion since the conclusion of the 2023 edition. Dhoni led CSK to a record-equalling fifth title in IPL 2023 and though he assured fans of his return next season, fans feared the worst. Nursing an ankle injury throughout the tournament, he underwent surgery to spark speculations surrounding his future.
Fans’ fear came true when Dhoni relinquished CSK captaincy ahead of the IPL 2024 season to promote Ruturaj Gaikwad as the new skipper. Much to the relief of fans, Dhoni featured for the five-time winners but played a limited role, coming to bat lower down the order with not many balls to face and still managed to make an impact.
He mostly came out to bat in the dying moments and smashed 13 sixes and 14 fours in the 73 balls he faced across the season. His strike rate was a whopping 220.54.
Despite his superb fitness, Dhoni is not getting younger. The former India captain, who turned 43 in July, spoke about his future in an event in Hyderabad.
Dhoni wants to adopt a wait-and-watch approach before deciding on his IPL future. He wants to wait and see if any rule changes are implemented for the next season and then decide accordingly. IPL teams met with BCCI on Wednesday to chalk out the auction and retention plans ahead of the 2025 season.
Dhoni provides update on his IPL future
“There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court.
“So, once the rules and regulations get formalised, I will take a call, but needs to be in the best interest of the team,” said Dhoni.
The BCCI met franchise owners and officials to discuss a host of rules, including the Impact Player rule, retention, and the existence and frequency of the mega auction.
