Bundesliga: Borussia Dortmund sign Brazilian right-back Yan Couto from Manchester City

New Delhi: Borussia Dortmund have announced the signing of Brazilian right-back Yan Couto from Manchester City. The 22-year-old defender joins on loan until 30 June 2025, with a chance for a permanent move if he meets certain goals. The right-back went the last two seasons on loan at Girona in Spain’s La Liga. He helped Girona achieve a third-place finish last season and qualify for the Champions League for the first time in their history. Couto provided eight assists, the most by any defender in La Liga, showing his skill in both defence and attack. Previously, he was apparently targetted by clubs like AC Milan and West Ham (per reports) but no significant negotiations took place.

Talking about his move to Dortmund, Yan Couto said: “It’s a dream come true for me,”. He further added that the German club’s fans had always fascinated him. “Borussia Dortmund is a special club. Every kid in Brazil knows how big this club is, knows the fans and is fascinated by the Yellow Wall.”

Yan Couto is a young and talented right-back from Brazil. He was born on June 3, 2002, in Curitiba, Brazil, and started his football career with Coritiba. In 2020, Manchester City saw his potential and brought him to Europe.

At Girona, Couto grew as a player. He learned a lot and played against some of the best teams in Spain. His time in La Liga helped him become a better player, especially in attacking. His eight assists last season showed that he can create chances for his teammates, making him a valuable player both in defence and attack.

Couto has also played for the Brazil national team. He has four caps and was part of the squad for the 2024 Copa America, where he added an assist to his international record. This experience has prepared him well for playing in a top league like the Bundesliga.

Dortmund’s sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, is excited about Couto’s arrival. “Yan is an extremely exciting player,” Kehl said. “He can work the entire flank, and combines exceptional dynamism with intensity, technical finesse, and dribbling strength. He’s versatile, loves one-on-one duels, can hit precise crosses, and has a strong offensive drive.”

Kehl’s words show that Dortmund see Couto as a player who can grow and improve even more. They believe he can be a key player for the team, both now and in the future. Yan Couto is Dortmund’s fourth signing this summer. He joins Waldemar Anton, Serhou Guirassy, and Pascal Groß. Each of these signings shows that Dortmund are building a strong team to compete in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League.

Dortmund fans are excited to see Couto in the famous black and yellow jersey. His attacking skills and defensive strength will be important as Dortmund aim to win the Bundesliga and do well in the Champions League.
