Don’t Rely on US Government for Evacuation During Crisis, says US Embassy to Americans

The U.S. Embassy in Lebanon has issued a stark warning to American citizens, advising them not to depend on U.S. government assistance for evacuation during the ongoing crisis. The embassy’s statement comes amid travel disruptions and increasing uncertainty in the region, due to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

In its announcement, the embassy noted that several airlines have suspended or canceled flights, and remaining options are rapidly selling out. Despite these challenges, commercial transportation is still available, and U.S. citizens are encouraged to book any available flight, even if it does not fit their preferred schedule or route.

Don’t rely on US government, says US embassy

The embassy emphasized that U.S. military-assisted evacuations are rare and should not be relied upon. In the event of a government-assisted evacuation, individuals might not be able to travel with extended family members or pets, and they will be responsible for reimbursing the U.S. government for transportation costs and onward travel from the safe location to the U.S.

For those unable to afford the return trip, the embassy offers financial assistance through repatriation loans. However, the statement stressed the importance of preparing independent travel plans and not relying on government aid.

Citizens are advised to..

Make personal travel arrangements that do not depend on U.S. government assistance.Ensure that travel documents, including passports, are current and ready.Review personal security plans and keep cell phones charged for emergency contact.Stay informed about the situation by monitoring news and adjusting travel plans as needed.

The embassy’s message underscores the need for U.S. citizens in Lebanon to be self-reliant and prepared for potential extended stays if the situation deteriorates.
