What is Type 1.5 diabetes?

According to the Mayo Clinic, Type 1.5 diabetes is also called latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). It is a condition that shares almost the same characteristics as both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. LADA is mostly diagnosed during the growing-up phase or adulthood time and it sets in gradually like type 2 diabetes. Reports say if you have type 1.5 diabetes then your beta cells stop functioning much faster. Moreover, according to estimation, about 10 per cent of the people who have diabetes have LADA.

Symptoms of Type 1.5 diabetes

In the beginning, the symptoms of type 1.5 diabetes can be vague but some of them may include:

Frequent thirst
Increased urination, including at night
Unexplained weight loss
Blurred vision and tingling nerves

Causes of Type 1.5 diabetes

Type 1.5 diabetes can be triggered by the damage done to the pancreas from antibodies against the insulin-producing cells. Genetic factors may also be involved like genetics and family history of autoimmune conditions. When the pancreas becomes damaged in type 1.5 diabetes, the body destroys the pancreatic beta cells as with type 1.
