Department of Post to release postage stamps to celebrate Paris Olympics, Sarabjot Singh to attend

New Delhi: The Department of Post has announced to release a set of commemorative postage stamps in a move to celebrate the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. The event is scheduled on Monday (August 5) at the Rang Bhawan in New Delhi. Paris Olympics bronze medallist Sarabjot Singh along with former Olympians and cricket players will mark presence at the event.

In a release by the Department of Posts, the commemorative stamp highlights the spirit of sportsmanship and celebrates the unity of nations as they come together for the Olympic Games in Paris. The stamp serves as a tribute to the athletes and their dedication, perseverance and excellence in sports. The release of stamp will indicate India’s support for Olympics and the athletes who participate in the prestigious event.

Union ministers Jyotiraditya Scindia (Union Minister of Communications & Development of North Eastern Region) and Dr Mansukh Mandaviya (Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports and Labour & Employment) will be the top dignitaries at the event. The ministers will deliver their speeches to emphasise the importance of the Olympics and how sports serves as a bridge to maintain international harmony. Furthermore, some sports icons will also be present at the event.

How has India performed at Paris Olympics so far?

India sent their second largest contingent at the Paris Olympics, consisting of 117 athletes and 140 support staff members. The Olympics started on July 27 after the opening ceremony took place at the River Seine in Paris.

India have managed to bag three medals at the Paris Olympics so far with a few more contenders expected to finish at the podium in the coming days. 22-year-old shooter Manu Bhaker hogged the spotlight after becoming the first athlete to claim two medals in a single edition of an Olympics – bronze in women’s 10m air pistol and bronze in mixed team 10m air pistol along with Sarabjot. Swapnil Kusale added a bronze in the men’s 50m rifle three positions event.

The likes of Lakshya Sen, Neeraj Chopra, Mirabai Chanu, Antim Panghal, India men’s hockey team are the other contenders to add to India’s medal tally in this edition.
