Gambhir’s approach has been different and that is exactly the strategy that he is implementing in Team India as can be seen in the treatment of Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav. Now, Rohit Sharma is not new to bowling. He did bowl earlier, but rarely. In the second ODI vs Sri Lanka, Rohit Sharma brought himself on and actually ended up bowling two overs. Needless to say, Sharma bowls off-spin and his two overs cost 11 runs. Good move? Shubhman Gill gave away 11 runs in one over.

However, what is the ultimate strategy? Is Gautam Gambhir looking at adding another batsman in the team at the expense of a bowler and thereby bolster India’s batting. If, he finds success in the moves he is championing now, that may well be on the way and we may see Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav turn their arms over increasingly.
