As soon as former cricketer Gautam Gambhir was appointed the new coach of Team India by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), it was evidently clear that there would be a massive transformation in the way things are done. On the field, Gambhir was one of the most passionate players around, sometimes even putting the likes of Virat Kohli in the shade. Gambhir’s approach has been different and that is exactly the strategy that he is implementing in Team India as can be seen in the treatment of Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav. Both have been seen in an unfamiliar avatar.
Now, whether you are a veteran or a newbie, Gambhir has brought them all to one level and more than that, he is making sure they are contributing more than their 100% in the effort to ensure wins for the country. The same can be seen in the treatment being meted out to veteran and captain Rohit Sharma. After batting sensation Suryakumar Yadav, fondly nicknamed SKY by friends and fans, bowled a sensational over during the recently concluded T20 series against Sri Lanka, Gautam Gambhir has made the ODI skipper do the same. Notably, Suryakumar Yadav bowled during the India vs Sri Lanka 3rd T20.
Now, Rohit Sharma is not new to bowling. He did bowl earlier, but rarely. In the second ODI vs Sri Lanka, Rohit Sharma brought himself on and actually ended up bowling two overs. Needless to say, Sharma bowls off-spin and his two overs cost 11 runs. Good move? Shubhman Gill gave away 11 runs in one over.
Gautam Gambhir’s Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav strategy
For now, Gambhir seems to have prevailed over Rohit Sharma to make his batsmen bowl too. And this strategy may continue, considering that Gambhir is not known for backing down from his decisions once taken. The same could be seen throughout his career as a batsman.
However, what is the ultimate strategy? Is Gautam Gambhir looking at adding another batsman in the team at the expense of a bowler and thereby bolster India’s batting. If, he finds success in the moves he is championing now, that may well be on the way and we may see Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav turn their arms over increasingly.
With India losing yesterday’s ODI to Sri Lanka, did this strategy actually get a boost? After all, another frontline batsman at the team’s disposal may well have turned the tide against Sri Lanka. That would have applied to the drawn tie earlier too when Arshdeep Singh made a mess of things by giving up an easy winning position, allowing Sri Lanka to force a miraculous draw.
In a big surprise, Rohit Sharma bowled during the India vs Sri Lanka ODI, just like Suryakumar Yadav had to do in an earlier T20 match, as Gautam Gambhir makes startling changes. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
