From one champion to another: Suryakumar Yadav lauds Olympic gold-medallist Novak Djokovic

New Delhi: Suryakumar Yadav has made a habit of earning plaudits. The Indian cricket superstar boasts a massive fan following across the globe courtesy of his flamboyant batting style. But more recently, he drew praises for his fearless and innovative captaincy in the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. Surya led India to a 3-0 sweep over the Islands in his first series as India’s T20I captain.

Not part of the Indian ODI and Test squads, Surya won’t be in action until October 6 when India host Bangladesh in the first match of the three-T20I series. Despite being on a long break from cricket, SKY hasn’t been able to keep himself away from sports. The star batter is treating his eyes to some amazing sporting action at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics.

SKY pays tribute to Novak Djokovic

SKY took to Instagram Stories to share a congratulatory post for tennis icon Novak Djokovic, who defeated Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the gold medal match of the men’s singles tennis competition at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Sunday. The 24-time Grand Slam champion edged past Alcaraz in a rematch of the 2024 Wimbledon final, which he lost to the Spaniard.

The straight-sets (7-6, 7-6) win over the reigning Wimbledon and French Open champion helped the Serbian icon to become the oldest tennis player (37) in history to win a gold medal at the Olympics. The most successful male tennis player also became only the fifth player after Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal, and Serena Williams to complete a Career Slam by winning all four Grand Slam titles and a gold medal at the Olympics.

After Djokovic’s landmark win, Surya took to Instagram to post a picture of the Serb and captioned it, “This man is on fire! Well fought and so well deserved @djokernole.”

Suryakumar also hailed silver medallist Alcaraz: “What a fight by @carlitosalcarazz.”

Surya flew back home after leading India to a 3-0 sweep against Sri Lanka in the T20I series. Since his return, India’s fortunes have dwindled in the ODI series. The Men in Blue, under skipper Rohit Sharma, find themselves 0-1 down in the three-match ODI series after producing two below-par performances.

Rohit’s men survived a huge scare in the first ODI, managing somehow to save the first match by the skin of their teeth. But the tied first ODI spurred Sri Lanka to produce an even better performance in the second ODI, winning the contest by 32 runs.
