In a newly released book, “The Making of a Royal Romance,” royal author Katie Nicholl unveils details of a significant moment of heartache in Kate Middleton’s life before her marriage to Prince William. According to Nicholl, the future Duchess of Cambridge was left devastated when Prince William canceled plans for New Year‘s 2006 at the last minute.
As per royal tradition, Kate could not join the royal family for Christmas at Sandringham before their marriage. Despite their long-term relationship, the couple remained apart on December 25.
They had hoped to spend New Year‘s together, but William unexpectedly decided to stay with his own family, breaking his promise to Kate. This decision reportedly led Kate to worry about their future.
Prince William was advised not to rush into marriage
Nicholl writes that Prince William, who was then still weighing his commitment, discussed his feelings with his father and grandmother, who advised him not to rush into marriage. The decision caused a brief separation between Kate and William in early 2007, which reportedly disappointed Queen Elizabeth.
However, the split was short-lived, with the couple rekindling their relationship shortly afterward. They were seen together at an army party at Bovington barracks and announced their engagement in 2010, marrying in April 2011.
Challenges Kate faced from William’s social circle
Nicholl’s book also reveals the challenges Kate faced from Prince William’s social circle. The future Duchess was subjected to ridicule from William’s friends, who mocked her mother Carole Middleton’s previous job as a flight attendant by calling Kate “Doors to Manual.” Despite the derogatory nickname, Kate maintained her composure and resilience, a testament to her strong character.
