London: UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy expressed concerns over Bangladesh unrest and called for a UN-led independent investigation on Monday.

‘The people of Bangladesh deserve a full and independent UN-led investigation into the events of the past few weeks,’ Stated Foreign Secretary, David Lammy.
David Lammy has called the situation unprecedented, emphasizing the gravity of the crisis.
‘The last two weeks in Bangladesh have seen unprecedented levels of violence and tragic loss of life. A transitional period has been announced by the Chief of the Army Staff,’ said UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy.
‘All sides now need to work together to end the violence, restore calm, de-escalate the situation and prevent any further loss of life,’ he added.
He also conveyed the UK’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh in its journey towards a peaceful and democratic future, highlighting the strong relationship between the two nations, which is built on shared Commonwealth values and significant personal connections.
“The UK is keen to see concrete steps towards ensuring a peaceful and democratic future for Bangladesh. Our nations share deep personal ties and common Commonwealth values,” he noted.

Bangladesh’s Embattled Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country on Monday after month-long students protest over reservations in government jobs. Hasina landed at Hindon Airbase on the outskirts of Delhi and may seek asylum in the United Kingdom.
Bangladesh has been experiencing intense protests over the contentious quota system that allocates 30 percent of jobs to the families of veterans from the 1971 liberation war. These protests have escalated into violence, plunging the country into widespread chaos and anarchy.
