New Delhi: Reigning Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra will begin his quest for the gold medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Tuesday, August 06. Neeraj will begin his title defence by taking part in the men’s javelin throw qualification round. Neeraj created history at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal in athletics at the Olympics.
He will be hoping to replicate his heroics in Paris and script more history by bagging his second gold medal in a row. Neeraj will be competing alongside his Indian compatriot Kishore Jena, who bagged a silver medal at the Asian Games last year.
While all eyes will be on Neeraj, the Indian hockey men’s team will be eyeing a place in the final when they take on Germany in the highly-anticipated semi-final on Tuesday. The Indian hockey team qualified for the semi-final after defeating Great Britain in a penalty shootout despite being reduced to 10 men after a red card to Amit Rohidas.
The Indian men’s hockey team won a bronze medal after beating Germany in the bronze medal match in Tokyo 2020 and will be hoping to go a step further this year. India last qualified for the men’s hockey final at the Olympics 44 years ago at the Moscow Games in 1980 where they won gold. Captain Harmanpreet Singh has been leading from the front and will be looking to take his team into their first final since 1980.
In wrestling, all eyes will be on the experienced Vinesh Phogat, who will begin her campaign in the women’s 50kg freestyle category. The two-time Olympian will be up against Yui Susaki of Japan in the pre-quarter-finals. Vinesh is a strong medal prospect for India at the Games and will be hoping to live up to the expectations.
Pahal Kiran will compete in the women’s 400m repechage round in athletics while the Indian men’s table tennis team consisting of Sharath Kamal, Harmeet Desai and Manav Thakkar will take on top seed China in their opening match.
