Paris Olympics 2024, India’s Day 12 schedule: Vinesh Phogat eyes gold, Mirabai Chanu too in fray

New Delhi: It was a historic day for India at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Tuesday, August 07 as Vinesh Phogat became the first female wrestler from the country to reach an Olympic final. Vinesh stole the show for India on Day 11 with her incredible entry into the final of the women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling category. Neeraj Chopra too qualified for the men’s javelin throw final with ease as he produced a monstrous throw of 89.34m in his first attempt.

She started with an unreal victory against defending Olympic champion Yui Susaki before beating Ukrainian Oksana Livach in the quarter-final and Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the semifinal to secure her spot in the final. Vinesh will take on USA’s Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the final on Wednesday, July 07 and will be aiming to script history by becoming the first Indian female wrestler to win a gold medal at the Olympics.

Vinesh will headline India’s campaign on Day 12 with her maiden appearance in an Olympic final. However, India will also have several other athletes in contention for a medal on Day 12 of the Paris Olympics 2024. Weightlifter Mirabi Chanu will begin her campaign at the Games in the women’s 49kg category.

Chanu will be aiming to bag her second medal at the Olympics after winning a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Avinash Sable, who became the first Indian man to qualify for the Men’s 3000m steeplechase final, will also be eyeing a medal in the final on Wednesday. In wrestling, promising youngster Antim Panghal, who defeated Vinesh in trials, will begin her campaign in the women’s 53kg category.

Taking some inspiration from Vinesh, Antim too will be hoping to kick off her campaign with a win and secure a spot in the quarter-final followed by the semi-final. The Manika Batra-led Indian women’s table tennis team will also be in action as they will take on Germany in their quarter-final match.
