New Delhi: From leading the protests against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh a few months back to becoming the first female wrestler from the country to reach an Olympic final, life came full circle for Vinesh Phogat at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Tuesday. It was the story of the day as Vinesh earned back-to-back three magnificent victories to storm into the final.
She started with a stunning victory against defending Olympic champion Yui Susaki of Japan, staging a mighty upset against her in their Round of 16 bout in the women’s 50kg freestyle category. Vinesh then went on to beat former European champion Ukraine’s Oksana Livach 7-5 in the quarter-final before thrashing Guzman Lopez of Cuba 5-0 in the semi-final to enter her maiden Olympic final.
As the entire country lauded the ‘daughter of the nation’ for her heroics at the Paris Olympics, her fellow comrade and wrestler Bajrang Punia posted a tweet that was a stark reminder of the atrocities Vinesh was subjected to in her own country before earning laurels for the nation at the biggest stage of them all.
Vinesh was kicked, crushed in her own country: Bajrang
Bajrang took to Twitter to remind the countrymen of what Vinesh was subjected to during their protests against Brij Bhushan, who was accused of sexual assault and death threats by multiple female wrestlers. Bajrang, Vinesh and Sakshi Malik led the protests against Brij Bhushan at the Jantar Mantar in Delhi for months and had to face the tyranny of the system.
“Vinesh has created history. She has become the first Indian woman to reach an Olympic final in wrestling. All Indians have tears in their eyes today. These are the daughters of the nation who have always made the country proud. Those who have always placed thorns in the path of these daughters will at least learn a lesson from these daughters and will refrain from sowing thorns in their path in future,” Bajrang wrote in a tweet.

While Bajran and Sakshi are already Olympic medallists, Vinesh too is now confirmed to return with at least a silver medal from the Paris Olympics. She will lock horns with Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of USA in the final and will be looking to become the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Olympics. No Indian female athlete has ever won a gold medal at the prestigious event.
Vinesh will also become the first Indian wrestler to win a gold medal at the Olympics. Competing in her third Olympics after tasting disappointment in her first two campaigns in 2016 and 2021, Vinesh is just one win away from scripting history in Paris.
