Bangladesh skipper imitates Rohit Sharma and Lionel Messi, follows ‘sleeping with trophy’ trend

New Delhi: Bangladesh stunned the cricketing world by whitewashing Pakistan 2-0 to register their maiden Test series victory over their more fancied neighbours on Tuesday. The ‘Bangla Tigers’ humiliated the turbulent yet proud cricketing nation in their backyard to signal a tectonic shift in the landscape of Asian cricket. Najmul Hossain Shanto, 26, led the team brilliantly in two roaring victories against Shan Masood’s men in Rawalpindi.

Following the landmark victory, the Bangladesh skipper was clicked while sleeping with the trophy. The picture went viral in no time with fans flooding the internet with reactions.

Shanto is not the first cricketer to capture the iconic ‘Sleeping with the Trophy’ moment. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was pictured waking up next to the T20 World Cup 2024 trophy earlier this year. Iconic footballer Lionel Messi started the trend after winning the Qatar FIFA World Cup in 2022.

Joy for the Tigers, Disappointment for PAK

The six-wicket loss in the second Test stretched Pakistan’s winless run at home to 10 Tests (6 defeats and 4 draws). They also slipped two places to eighth in the ICC Test rankings and slumped to their lowest ratings in 59 years following the humiliating whitewash.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh, despite, registering a historic victory, remained static at the ninth spot in the latest team rankings. Following the morale-boosting win against Pakistan, Bangladesh would be aiming to replicate its performance against India. The Bangla Tigers next face the Asian giants in the two-Test series, beginning in Chennai on September 19.

Pakistan, on the other hand, will host England in a three-match Test series in October.
