In shocking twist of fate, Vinesh Phogat disqualified from finals, misses out on Olympic medal

New Delhi: In a shocking twist of fate, Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the Paris 2024 Olympics wrestling finals and missed out on winning a medal at the 33rd edition of the Summer Games.

According to a report in Indian Express, Vinesh could not make the weight on the morning of her 50 kg gold medal bout, which is scheduled for tonight (Wednesday).

Sources say the wrestler was roughly 100 grams over the permissible limits which led to her disqualification. According to the rules, Phogat will not even be permitted to contest for a silver medal and the 50 kg will have just gold and bronze medal winners.

A source in the Indian contingent later told PTI, that Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the Olympic finals after being found slightly overweight.

According to Indian Express, Vinesh was approximately 2 kilos overweight on Tuesday night few hours after scripting history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the gold medal bout.

She didn’t sleep the whole night and tried everything to meet the criteria – from jogging to skipping and cycling.

However, all her efforts proved futile as she was found 100 gm overweight on the morning of her gold medal bout. Sources said the Indian delegation asked for some more time to give her a chance to lose the weight, but their pleas fell on deaf ears.

“She was found overweight by 100gm this morning. The rules do not allow this and she has been disqualified,” said an Indian coach.

It is not the first time Phogat has faced difficulties related to weight in the 50 kg category, a lower one compared to the 53 kg where she usually fights. She faced a similar issue during the Olympic qualifiers, where she made the cut by the barest of margins.
