New Delhi: Amidst the doom and gloom surrounding the Indian wrestling fraternity, there was some good news on Thursday. On a day when seasoned pro Vinesh Phogat retired from the sport following his disqualification from the Paris 2024 Olympics final, young Indian grappler Aman Sehrawat raised a hope for medal in the men’s category by qualifying in the quarterfinal.
Sehrawat sailed into the last eight after an easy win over North Macedonian rival Vladimir Egorov in the 57kg freestyle category in Paris.
The 21-year-old Indian, an Asian Championship gold medallist is the only male wrestler from the country participating in the 33rd edition of the Summer Games.

Young Aman too hot to handle for the seasoned wrestler
Sehrawat produced a clinical performance against his Macedonian opponent, remaining amazingly agile throughout the bout. He kept his defence intact and regularly overpowered the 29-year-old former European champion with leg holds.
In the end, he proved too hot to handle for the veteran wrestler and won the bout on technical superiority (10-0).
Egorov looked in discomfort in the first round itself, requiring medical attention on his knee thanks to Aman’s all-out attack. It was all downhill for the Macedonian from that moment onwards. He couldn’t recover from the injury and failed to mount a comeback as Aman effected a takedown to bag two more points and race to a 10-0 lead ith more than two minutes remaining on the clock.
Aman’s quarterfinal bout will take place later in the day.
