Dr Rakesh Kumar Chaddha, HOD, Psychiatry, Amrita Hospital Faridabad told News9, “One of the biggest casualties of digital communication has been in-person social interactions, which are important for emotional well-being and also bringing human touch and emotional warmth to relationships. People have stopped going out with outdoor activities including outdoor games as well as physical exercise being gradually hygienic, and hence affecting physical as well as mental wellbeing.”
Instant messaging on digital devices has often been associated with creating misunderstandings and spoiling relationships and may cause irreparable damage to relationships.
Cyber crimes like cyber-bullying, cybersex and even financial fraud are serious adverse sequelae of digital communication.
Overindulgence in the digital world like using it for a long time for entertainment, especially at nighttime may affect the sleep-wake cycle. Overuse can also lead to eye strain and headaches.
How to protect yourself from the harms of the overuse of digital technology?
Digital technology and communication are now a part and parcel of our daily lives. These have facilitated and made our lives easier in many ways. But its excessive use can lead to several harms as discussed above. Some cautions:
1. Limit the duration of screentime
2. Always think twice before sending any instant message
3. Don’t allow digital communication to disturb your daily schedules like eating, sleeping, relaxing, family and exercise time.
4. Close screens when eating.
5. Keep track of your screen time on your phone
6. Seek professional advice if you feel tense and jittery about not being able to control your screentime
7. Be careful of being a victim of cybercrimes
