No cars in Los Angeles? Here’s what the city’s mayor has outlined for LA 2028 Olympics

New Delhi: The city of Paris worked tirelessly to make the 2024 Olympic Games a success, both on and off the field. Taking off the field route, one of its salient features was that the organisers made the Games environment-friendly, promoting recycling and emissions reduction. The commitment was extended to traffic as there were dedicated lanes for athletes and other staff in a bid to reduce the use of cars, weighing in on the philosophy of the 15-minute city.

After a successful handover of the Olympic flag from Paris to Los Angeles on Sunday, the city has started the journey for 2028, aiming for a “car-free” and traffic jam-free Games. The US city, which hosted the Games back in 1984, will be facing a difficult challenge as cars and highways are almost part of its identity. It is quite difficult to navigate through the city by other means.

Nonetheless, the LS 2028 organisers are mulling over formulas such as promoting the use of public transport or working from home, making notes from the pandemic experience. Karen Bass, the mayor of Los Angeles, addressed the media that the city will be investing in improving its transport. “We’ve been building our transportation system to do that,” Inside the Games quoted Bass as saying. while also noting that the plan would require borrowing more than 3,000 buses from the rest of the United States.

Bass showed faith in the plan saying that it is possible and referred to the city’s history of the 1984 Olympics. The city did not have the traffic problems that were expected. “And in 1984 we didn’t have any of the technology we have today,” she added.

We have the Hollywood sign – LA28 prez

The other part that Los Angeles seems to want to follow Paris is in terms of the look of the city. In Paris, the iconic Eiffel Tower was lit up and also had the Olympic rings on it, making it a breathtaking visual. The Palace of Versailles and even the Seine River were integrated well into the sporting events apart from the designated Olympic venues.

“We don’t have an Eiffel Tower, we have the Hollywood sign. We have incredible venues. We have incredible geography and we’re going to prove it,” president of LA28, Casey Wasserman said.
