Nathan Lyon surpasses R Ashwin to achieve special feat in World Test Championship

New Delhi: Nathan Lyon has achieved a special milestone in the ongoing fifth Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test match between India and Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Friday, January 3.

The veteran Australia spinner dismissed Shubman Gill just before lunch on Day 1 of the Sydney Test and became the leading wicket-taker in the World Test Championship (WTC). Lyon now has 196 wickets in 48* Test matches, surpassing Ravichandran Ashwin who picked up 195 wickets in 41 games of the World Test Championship. Ashwin announced his retirement from international after the Brisbane Test.

Apart from Lyon, Australian captain Pat Cummins is third on this list. He picked up 195 wickets in 47* WTC matches and Mitchell Starc is in fourth position with 163 wickets in 43* Test matches. Star India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is in fifth spot with 154 wickets in 35* Tests.

Lyon overtakes Ashwin to become 7th Leading Wicket-Taker in Tests

Nathan Lyon also surpassed Ravichandran Ashwin and became the 7th leading wicket-taker in Test Cricket history after the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. The Australian spinner now has 539 wickets in 134* Test matches while Ashwin has 537 wickets in 106 Test matches. A total of six bowlers are ahead of Lyon in the list of bowlers with the most wickets in Test cricket. Muttiah Muralitharan is in first position with 800 Test wickets and Shane Warne is in second spot with 708 wickets in Tests.

England fast bowler James Anderson is in third position with 704 Test wickets, Anil Kumble is in fourth spot with 619 wickets, Stuart Broad is in fifth position with 604 Test wickets while Glenn McGrath is in sixth position with 563 Test wickets.
