Paris Olympics: Neeraj Chopra in Germany to consult doctors over injury

New Delhi: Paris Olympics silver medallist Neeraj Chopra has travelled to Germany to consult doctors over possibility of surgery on his injury.

Chopra was the defending javelin champion at Paris 2024, but was upstaged by Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who set an Olympic record of 92.97m to win gold.

After inability to retain his crown, Chopra said his build-up was hampered by a groin injury. He also had to skip several warm-up events before the Games with an adductor muscle niggle.

Doctor’s suggestion could decide whether Chopra could participate in the upcoming Diamond League meetings.

A relative of Chopra said that he has already moved to Germany and won’t be returning to India for at least 30 days.

“Chopra has left for Germany and he will not return to India for another month and a half. I am not aware of the much of the details, but for sure he will consult a doctor there (Germany),” the family source was quoted sa saying by PTI.

Diamond League participation in doubt

After winning at the Paavo Nurmi Games in June, Chopra had spoken of his intention to consult doctors once the Paris Games gets completed.

He had already spoken to a doctor in Germany earlier after which he trained Saarbrucken prior to the Olympics.

Chopra had spoke of his desire to compete in the Diamond League Final to be held in Brussels on September 14, for which he needs to participate in either in the Lausanne leg on August 22 or in Zurich on September 5.

“His team (of coach and physio) will decide whether he will play in the DL Meetings (and the DL Final), according to his condition,” the family source told PTI.

At Paris 2024, Chopra threw 89.45m to claim silver following which he hinted of going under the knife to address his groin complaint.
