New Delhi: Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen revealed how his venture got in touch with javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem to support him in his journey of Paris Olympics gold medal.
The 27-year-old Arshad has turned into a sporting icon in Pakistan, a country obsessed with cricket. Thanks to his humungous effort of 92.97m throw, which is now an Olympic record, that has basked him in the glory of Pakistan’s Olympic journey.
Arshad became the first individual gold medallist from Pakistan, adding to the three gold medals won by their men’s national hockey team (1960, 1968 & 1984). He ended Pakistan’s medal drought at the Olympics after 32 years.

It was reported that Arshad struggled with funding in the build up to the Paris Games, training with only one javelin for nearly three years after the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen said that Arshad never made any appeal to them but they were the ones to volunteer in his cause.
“Arshad never made an appeal for funding. His statement was taken out of context. We reached out to him ourselves,” Ali Tareen told The Indian Express.
“We started supporting him earlier this year. The main goal was to give him reliable regular income so he doesn’t have to worry about running his household between tournaments. It’s a long term commitment regardless of tournament participation, performance or injuries.
“I work with a lot of underprivileged athletes. And the stress of proving for their family on a monthly basis is a huge stress and is always at the back of their mind,” he added.
