New Delhi: Cardiac arrest is a deadly condition wherein the heart stops beating suddenly. This is when either the heart stops working gradually or suddenly halts its functions. Doctors advise immediately reaching a doctor in this case as delay in treatment can be deadly. But as prevention is always said to be better than cure, is it possible to prevent it in the first place?
In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Brajesh Kumar Mishra, Interventional cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist, at Manipal Hospital, Gurugram, revealed the statistics of sudden cardiac arrest in young people and its risk factors.
“Sudden cardiac death is in less than 40 years comprises of 1/3rd of total cases of SCA in women, the knowledge of this subset was very less till now. However recent research has shown that conventional risk factors like diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia were less prevalent in this subset but the prevalence of smoking in 30% and obesity in about 25 % of the population were the most prevalent risk factors. Out of 3/4th of observed cardiac arrest only 42%reached the hospital alive. Among all etiology of cardiac arrest, more than 50 percent were cardiac. Cardiomyopathies and Acute heart attacks are important causes leading to cardiac arrest,” said Dr Mishra.
The expert also said that common symptoms associated with the possibility of sudden cardiac arrest which need urgent evaluation are chest pain neck pain jaw pain breathlessness pain in arms nausea vomiting sweating, light headedness giddiness and black out fatigue heart burn etc.
How to prevent a sudden cardiac arrest?
Dr Mishra also listed preventive tips for cardiac arrest patients:
Quit smoking don’t start smoking
Eat healthy meals rich in fruits salad and nuts avoid junk
Exercise and yoga
Manage stress
Avoid and limit alcohol intake
Follow your treatment plan and goals of management like BP and sugar management
Manage risk factors very aggressively to control bp sugar lipid obesity etc
