World Environment Day 2024: 5 health benefits of planting trees amid the rise of global warming and urbanisation

New Delhi: In the past few decades the world has noticed a drastic rise in global warming and urbanisation. There is no doubt the world is becoming a concrete jungle day by day. Due to this our health has suffered a lot and is continuing. Well, here comes the role of planting more trees around us so that amid the rising pollution we can get at least some amount of fresh air. Planting trees offers multiple health benefits, it improves the air quality by filtering the pollutants and releasing oxygen. This also helps to boost the respiratory health.

Trees also provide solace and release the stress and tension from within. According to some studies, having more green spaces around helps to fight global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide in the air. On World Environment Day, let’s delve into the health benefits of plants around us.

In conversation with News9, Dr Manjusha Agarwal, Senior Consultant Internal Medicine Gleneagles Hospitals Parel Mumbai said, “When there were more trees around, people were able to stay hale and hearty. Trees are known to provide oxygen, shade, and fresh air to everyone. One tends to feel happy and calm when he/she is around the tress. According to various studies, being close to nature ( that is trees and plants) can help to relax and de-stress when one is anxious. So, it is possible to control stress, lower blood pressure, and boost our immune systems.”

The fresh air and oxygen released by the trees are known to improve respiratory health and overall quality of life. Did you know?

Releases oxygen: Trees help to tackle global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen back into the air. It is possible to reverse the effects of global warming by planting more trees.

Cognitive health: The advantages of living near trees or in the greenery will improve cognitive health too.

Boosts physical activities: People tend to be more physically active in areas with abundant greenery, leading to reduced obesity and related chronic diseases.

Keeps body cool: The shade provided by trees can help combat high temperatures, mitigating the effects of heat waves and improving the health of the individual. However, due to urbanization and deforestation, the earth is unable to keep cool and there are sudden changes in the temperature. Unfortunately, deforestation contributes to water scarcity and erosion, leading to an increased risk of malnutrition.

Improves overall well-being: Addressing deforestation is the need of the hour for the environment as well as one’s well-being. More and more people should be encouraged to plant trees. It will be imperative to create awareness about deforestation and come up with awareness campaigns for people of all age groups. Everyone should pledge to plant more trees and keep indoor plants to ensure the circulation of fresh air from time to time.
