Celebrating India’s greatest victories on 78th Independence Day

New Delhi: While cricket is considered a religion in India, number of other sports too hold a special place in the hearts of the nation. Indian sportspersons form different beats have made the country proud at the international sporting stage since years.

As India celebrates its 78th Independence Day on August 15, 2024, it is time to revisit some of the greatest victories India has achieved in the last eight decades almost and made a name for the country at the global sporting stages.

Indian cricket team’s accolades

It was the year 1983, 36 years after India got independence, when Indian cricket team achieved a massive success at the global cricketing stage, beating the West Indies to lift their maiden ODI World Cup title. Indian cricket team again achieved the feat in 2007 winning the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup and then repeated the ODI glory in 2011. This year in June, India clinched the T20 World Cup trophy for a second time.

2008 Olympics

Beijing Olympics in the year 2008, 16 years back, became one of the most important Olympic Games in the history for India. Ace shooter Abhinav Bindra made the country proud by clinching India’s first individual gold medal at the Olympics in the men’s 10-metre air rifle competition and etched his name in the history books.

1987 cricket glory

In March 1987, legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar, who is considered as one of the best in the business made the country proud by becoming the first-ever player in cricketing history to cross the 10,000-run mark in the Test format.

Olympics

While shooter Abhinav Bindra shined for the country at the 2008 Beijing Games, boxer Vijender Singh also made the nation proud in the same edition. Vijender won a bronze medal becoming the first Indian boxer to clinch a medal at the Olympics.

Recognition in Chess

India’s Viswanathan Anand became the first grandmaster from the country in the year 1988 while created history 12 years later in 2000 by becoming the first Indian to clinch the World Championships in chess.

Indian hockey team

Indian men’s hockey team is considered to be the most successful of all at the Olympic Games. Out of their record 8 gold medal at the prestigious event, 5 of them have come after independence. At the Paris Games in 2024, India won a bronze medal.
