Pakistan government insults hockey stars after cancelling invitations for Arshad Nadeem’s function

New Delhi: The year 2024 gave Pakistan its new generation sporting star in form of javelin champion Arshad Nadeem. Arshad etched his name in the history books after clinching a gold medal in the men’s javelin throw event at the recently-concluded Paris Olympics 2024. His victory became three fold as he pipped Asian rival Neeraj Chopra to bag the country’s first-ever gold at the Olympics with a record throw of 92.97.

Since his return to Pakistan, the star athlete is being felicitated from all the quarters. From a rousing reception at the airport to getting hefty cash rewards, he has bagged it all. Recently he was rewarded with 10 million Pakistan rupees and a brand new car by the Punjab government for his historic feat. Meanwhile, the grandest of all happened at the end as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hosted a reception in honour of the athlete.

Former hockey star feels insulated

Former hockey player Rao Saleem Nazim on Saturday claimed that the Pakistan government insulted several Olympians by withdrawing their invitations for the gala dinner hosted in the honour of Olympic champion Arshad in the name of guest management. The PM house had sent invitation to several hockey legends of the country to attend the function and they all received emails which confirmed their invitations.

But unfortunately at the last moment, many of the hockey stalwarts received messages from the PM secretariat that since they were finding it difficult to adjust the number of guests, the invitations had been withdrawn, Nazim confirmed.

The Olympian questioned the treatment former Pakistan players while holding a function to honour an olympic gold medallist. “Is this how you show respect to players who have brought not one but several olympic medals in hockey for the country,” Nazim added.

Pakistan hockey team last bagged a medal at the Olympics in 1992 and since the last three editions, they have failed to qualify.
