New Delhi: India will begin their ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup defence against the West Indies in the second edition of the tournament that begins in Malaysia on January 18, next year.
India have been drawn in Group A with the hosts, West Indies and Sri Lanka in the tournament that will stretch till February 2.
India had won its inaugural edition, beating England in the final in South Africa last year. England, Pakistan, Ireland and the USA are clubbed in Group B.
South Africa, New Zealand, debutants Samoa and a qualifying team from Africa will comprise Group C while Australia, Bangladesh, Scotland, and a qualifying team from Asia are in Group D.
In the group phase, each team will have three match in a round-robin format after which the top three sides from all the four groups will advance to the Super Six stage.
The teams finishing at the bottom of the groups will battle in the last place play-off on January 24.
In the Super Six stage, the 12 sides will be divided into two groups, from which the top three teams of Groups A and D will form Group 1 while those from Groups B and C constitute Group 2.
At the Super Six stage, each team will carry forward the points of their wins and net run rate they collect from their two matches.
The to two placed teams from the two groups of the Super Six stage will advance to the semifinals, which will be held on January 31, while the final is scheduled two days later.
Both the last four stage matches and the final will be staged at the Bayuemas Oval, with reserve days for both the semifinals and final.
