Kolkata rape case: Harbhajan Singh pens letter to Mamata Banerjee, demands ‘swift, decisive action’

New Delhi: Former India cricketer and AAP MP Harbhajan Singh has written a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, demanding exemplary punishment for the perpetrators in the Kolkata rape and murder case. The rape and murder of a trainee doctor in the RG Kar Medical College in West Bengal’s capital has left the entire nation in shock.

Protests have been taking place across the countries as the heinous crime has sparked outrage among millions. The demands for justice for the victim have been growing loud with every passing day with several celebrities and notable personalities voicing their opinion on the matter.

Harbhajan too broke his silence on the shocking incident in Kolkata and demanded swift action from the West Bengal government in his letter to CM Mamata Banerjee. The former India cricket said the perpetrators should be given capital punishment to ensure the public’s faith is restored in the judicial system.

“With deep anguish over delay in justice to the Kolkata rape and murder victim, the incident which had shaken the conscience of all of us, I have penned a heartfelt plea to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal , Ms. @MamataOfficial Ji and Hon’ble @BengalGovernor urging them to act swiftly and decisively. The safety and dignity of women are non-negotiable. The perpetrators of this heinous crime must face the full weight of the law, and the punishment must be exemplary. Only then can we begin to restore faith in our system and ensure that such a tragedy never occurs again and we create a society where every woman feels safe and protected. We must ask ourselves—if not now, when? I feel, the time for action is now,” Harbhajan wrote on Twitter.

Shocking that such incident could occur within premises of a hospital: Harbhajan

Doctors and medical students in several institutions across the country have boycotted their daily duties in protest against the brutal rape and murder of the trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. Protests have also taken place in several cities, including Kolkata. Voices have been raised demanding stricter laws and punishment in rape cases in the country.

In his letter to Banerjee, Harbhajan expressed his shock over the fact that such an incident can occur inside the premises of a hospital. The former India cricketer called the Kolkata incident an ‘assault’ on the safety of every woman in the country.

“The fact that such an atrocity could occur within the premises of a medical institution, a place dedicated to healing and saving lives, is both shocking and unacceptable,” Singh wrote in the letter.

Harbhajan is not the only cricketer to have voiced his concern in the matter as India’s current T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav also took to his Instagram story on Sunday to post a hard-hitting message in the wake of the Kolkata rape and murder case. Suryakumar posted a story which said ‘Educate your son’ instead of ‘Protect your daughter’.

The Kolkata rape and murder case is currently being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI began conducting the psychological test of the accused Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, who was arrested in the case on Sunday.
