‘Show some spine’: Twitter reacts as Sourav Ganguly turns his DP black amid Kolkata rape protests

New Delhi: Days after being heavily criticised for calling the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital a ‘one-off stray’ incident, former India captain Sourav Ganguly blacked out his DP on all his social media accounts to showcase solidarity with the victim. The shocking incident has sparked outrage throughout the nation with protests taking place in nearly all states.

To express their solidarity with the victim and to extend their support for the protests, thousands of social media users have decided to change their DPs to the colour black. Ganguly did the same on Saturday, August 19 to clear his stance on the matter. On Saturday, Ganguly blocked out his DP and captioned it “‘New Profile Pic”.

Ganguly’s gesture is being seen by many in solidarity with the protests happening throughout the country demanding justice for the junior doctor who was brutally raped and murdered inside the hospital premises. However, a section of people were not convinced by the former India captain’s gesture and decided to call him out.

Many lashed out at Ganguly on Twitter over his ‘stray incident’ comment on the rape and murder case and urged him to take a proper stand on the issue instead of changing his profile picture. Many also criticised Ganguly for ‘lacking spine’ and failing to live up to his ‘Dada’ tag when it came to his own state and its government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

“Dada, cryptic posts won’t help. Talk. Apologize for the ‘stray incident’ remark, stand openly on the side of the victim’s family and ask the CM for accountability. Can you,” wrote a fan, responding to Ganguly’s post. “Its time you show some spine Dada and take a clear stand instead of changing DP like teenagers,” added another.

You can’t even call it out with a simple condemnation post? Spineless.

Saurav it was shameful the way you called it a Stray Incident !

It was a heinous rape and murder of an innocent girl by a group of people, which was sought to be covered up by the hospital & the mobs & the cops turned a blind eye

You SHOULD APOLOGISE ! First to her family &…

Earlier, Ganguly was slammed by many for calling the rape and murder of the junior doctor at the RG Kar Hospital as a ‘stray’ incident. The former India captain while demanding strict punishment for the perpetrators had said such incidents take place everywhere.

“It’s very unfortunate. There should be strict action against it. It’s terrible. I don’t think it is appropriate to judge safety issues based on a stray incident. It is just one of the incidents. Such accidents happen in all parts of the world but this has to be strictly dealt with,” Ganguly told reporters in Kolkata, leading to intense criticism.

However, Ganguly later clarified that his comments were misinterpreted and that he wanted severe punishment for the perpetrators to ensure that such crimes never happen again.

“I don’t know how it was construed and interpreted. It was a terrible thing. I want strict punishment for the culprits so that people don’t think of committing such crimes ever again. Punishment has to be very severe,” said Ganguly.
