New Delhi: The final day of the last 16 fixtures begins with a clash between the surprise package of this competition, Romania and Netherlands as the two sides face each other at Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany. Romania reached the knockout stages as they topped their group that contained Belgium, Ukraine and Slovakia, surprising everyone in the process whereas the Netherlands had a lacklustre group stage, finishing third in their group.
Romania began their campaign with a shocking 3-0 win over Ukraine which sent shockwaves through the entire competition before a loss and draw to Belgium and Slovakia saw them finish the group on four points along with everyone else in the group. They topped the group thanks to their superior goal difference and will be hoping for another solid performance against their biggest test yet in the competition.
The Netherlands began their tournament with a 2-1 win over Poland thanks to a late goal from Wout Werghoust. They didn’t have much to cheer about after that, drawing 0-0 with France and losing 3-2 to Austria in their remaining group stage games, which led them to finish third in a group they should’ve been in the top two at the very least.
This last 16 encounter is the 14th encounter between the two sides with the Netherlands being the winners nine times while Romania have just had a solitary win over the Dutch back in 2007. It looks set to be an exciting match with the winners proceeding to the last eight of the tournament and will face the winner of the Austria-Turkey game happening later tonight.
