Union of cricket players’ launch review of schedule overload

New Delhi: A union of cricket players have launched a review of the exhaustive schedule that leads to work overload of players.

The World Cricketers’ Association, formerly called FICA, has begun a review process to find ways to address a “broken and unsustainable” schedule.

“The current model is broken and unsustainable,” WCA said in a statement, as quoted by AFP.

“Confusing and chaotic global scheduling with no clarity on the interplay between international cricket and the domestic leagues means players are increasingly forced to choose between representing their country and optimising their careers.”

“Change is badly needed to create ongoing clarity, and value, for players, boards and fans alike.”

The WCA has formed a six-member panel, who will work with independent consultants, to find a way to reduce workload and form a calender in which international cricket and domestic leagues can exist together with clashing with each other.

Former England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive Tom Harrison and ex-Pakistan women’s team captain Sana Mir are part of the panel who will suggest recommendations to the WCA board.

‘Global structure’

The panel will consult with players, administrators, team owners and broadcasters before submitting recommendations to the WCA, which said they will strive to form a coherent calendar after considering everyone’s interest.

“We are fortunate that cricket is spoilt for choice and has three core formats across both the international game and domestic leagues, WCA chair Heath Mills said.

“To date, the game’s leadership has collectively failed to come together to establish a clear and coherent global structure in which they can co-exist. We have virtually given up hope of it doing so.”

In a recent research conducted by Professional Cricketers’ Association showed that 81 per cent of players expressed concerns over the physical demands stating that they get scant time to rest and recover.
