Washington: In a pivotal moment at the Democratic National Convention, President Joe Biden declared that Vice President Kamala Harris will be a “historic president” as he officially passed the leadership torch to her. The convention, held in Chicago, saw an emotional Biden endorse Harris as the party’s presidential candidate, urging the nation to support her in the upcoming election against Republican Donald Trump.

Biden, 81, received a standing ovation when he took the stage on the convention’s opening night. During his speech, he praised Harris, 59, as the best person to protect democracy and lead the country forward. “Are you ready to elect Kamala Harris as the President of the United States of America?” Biden asked the crowd, which responded with enthusiastic cheers and applause.

Harris is scheduled to formally accept the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination later this week, setting the stage for a historic election on November 5. Biden expressed confidence in her ability to lead, stating, “Harris will soon serve as the 47th President of the United States.”

Reflecting on their four years in office, Biden highlighted the significant achievements of the Biden-Harris administration, including expanding healthcare access and making critical investments in infrastructure. He contrasted these accomplishments with what he described as Trump’s failures, accusing the former president of making empty promises about infrastructure and undermining border security.

“We saved democracy in 2020, and we must do it again in 2024,” Biden urged, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming election. He encouraged Americans to vote for Harris and her running mate, Tim Waltz, as a means of safeguarding the nation’s future.

Biden’s endorsement was deeply personal, as he expressed his love for the country and his belief in Harris’s leadership. “I love my job. I love my country more,” he said, adding that the decisions made in this election will shape the fate of the world and the United States.

As he concluded his speech, Biden appeared emotional, wiping away a tear as he hugged his daughter Ashley Biden, who introduced him. The president’s address served as both a reflection on his legacy and a powerful endorsement of Harris, whom he described as a leader ready to take on the challenges ahead.

The convention continues this week, with Harris’s formal acceptance of the nomination expected to be a highlight. The Democratic Party is rallying behind her as the candidate who will not only build on Biden’s achievements but also bring a new chapter of leadership to the White House.
