New Delhi: Starbucks is set to welcome Brian Niccol as its new CEO next month, but his journey to work will be anything but ordinary. Niccol, who currently resides in California, will be making a daily commute of approximately 1,600 kilometers to Starbucks’ headquarters in Seattle.
According to the terms of his offer letter, Niccol will rely on a corporate jet for his long-distance commute. Despite the extensive travel, he is still expected to work from the Seattle office at least three days a week, adhering to Starbucks’ hybrid work policy that has been in effect since 2023.
Niccol, 50, will receive an annual base salary of $1.6 million. On top of that, he is entitled to earn a substantial cash bonus ranging from $3.6 million to $7.2 million, contingent on his performance. He will also be eligible for annual equity awards valued at up to $23 million.
This isn’t the first time Niccol has arranged such a unique commuting setup.
In 2018, when he took the helm as CEO of Chipotle, he successfully negotiated a similar deal. At that time, Chipotle’s headquarters was located in Colorado, just a short 15-minute drive from his previous job. However, within three months of his appointment, Chipotle relocated its headquarters from Denver to California.
For the unversed, since early 2023, Starbucks employees have been required to work in the office at least three days a week. However, Niccol’s extraordinary commuting arrangement highlights the stark contrast in flexibility between top executives and other employees.
