Washington: US Vice President Kamala Harris is “tough” and “capable,” said President Joe Biden while referring to her capabilities to fight their Republican rival Donald Trump in the November 4 elections. The President reposed his faith in Harris during his first address to the nation on Thursday, July 25, after he quit the US presidential race and recovered from COVID-19.
Biden (82) thanked Harris (59) for being an “incredible partner” to him and a leader for the US.
“I want to thank our great vice-president, Kamala Harris. She’s experienced. She’s tough. She’s capable. She’s been an incredible partner to me and a leader for our country,” Biden said while showering support to the VP.
In his 10 minute-long address from the Oval Office, the 82-year-old Democratic leader explained why he chose to quit the re-election bid and passed on the torch to VP Harris. Biden said that his records merited him a second term but “nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy.”
Biden’s stepping down from being a ticket contender for US Presidential polls marks the end of his political career. Expressing gratitude to Americans, Biden says nation’s democracy lies in the hands of voters.
‘…Best Way Forward is to Pass the Torch to New Generation’
Biden told his fellow countrymen that America is at an inflection point, saying that he has decided that the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation.
“I’ve decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. That’s the best way to unite our nation. I there is a time and a place for long years of experience in public life, but there’s also a time and a place for new voices, fresh voices, yes, younger voices, and that time and place is now,” Biden said in his Oval Office address to the nation.
The highly-anticipated address to the nation came three days after he announced that he was withdrawing from the presidential race, endorsing his deputy Kamala Harris as the nominee for the Democratic Party.
Harris, who is of Indian and African origin, has now emerged as the presumptive presidential nominee.
“I’ve made it clear that I believe America is at an inflection point, one of those rare moments in history when the decisions we make now will determine our fate of our nation and the world for decades to come,” he said from the Oval Office.
While referring to upcoming US polls, Biden said in just a few months, the American people will choose the course of America’s future.
