Jamie Smith breaks 94-year-old England record after smashing maiden Test century

New Delhi: Young Indian batter Jamie Smith broke a 94-year-old England record after smashing his maiden Test century during the England vs Sri Lanka first Test match at Old Trafford, Manchester. Smith, with his 111-run knock in 148 balls, helped England pile up 122-run first innings lead over the visiting side on the third day of the Test match.

Jamie breaks massive record

By virtue of his century, which came in 136 deliveries, Smith became the youngest England wicketkeeper to smash a Test hundred. The young batter broke the 94-year-old record held by Les Ames, who was 24 years and 63 days old when he scored a Test hundred. Jamie got to his hundred at the age of 24 years and 42 days.

The young player also became the first England wicketkeeper-batter to score a hundred for the team since December 2022. With some orthodox cricketing shots, Jamie kept the scoreboard ticking playing a pivotal role in the first innings of the series opener. Smith, who displayed his batting prowess to perfection, formed crucial partnerships with Harry Brook and Chris Woakes that helped the hosts rescue themselves.

His standout performance, which came at an impressive strike rate of 75, included 8 boundaries and a massive six. Meanwhile, England folded for 358, in reply to Sri Lanka’s first innings score of 236 runs. Harry Brook was the other notable contributor with a knock of 56 runs while Joe Root smashed 42 runs.

Rest of the batters could not show well against the Lankan bowling attack, which seemed quite disciplined at the Old Trafford. Asitha Fernando proved out to be the star bowler with four wickets while Prabath Jayasuriya claimed three wickets. Vishwa Fernando picked two wickets while Milan Rathnayake claimed one as Sri Lanka managed to restrict the hosts considerably.

Jamie Smith broke a 94-year-old Test record with his maiden century in the longest format. His innings of 111 helped England accumulate a good first innings lead over Sri Lanka.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
