World Test Championship rankings: England enter top 4, Bangladesh gain big after stunning Pakistan

New Delhi: England and Bangladesh have made big gains in the latest World Test Championship (WTC) rankings after their respective victories against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. England gained entry into the top four after beating visitors Sri Lanka comprehensively by 5 wickets in the first Test between the two sides in Manchester while Bangladesh moved to the sixth spot after their stunning win against Pakistan in the 1st Test in Rawalpindi.

England gained a strong position in the 1st Test against Sri Lanka after bundling out the visitors for 236 runs in their first innings before amassing a healthy lead of 122 runs in their first innings. Jamie Smith’s maiden Test ton helped England post 358 runs in response to Sri Lanka’s first-innings total of 236 runs and amass a substantial lead.

Sri Lanka got off to a disastrous start in their 2nd innings but fifties from Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal along with Kamindu Mendis’ brilliant 113 helped them post 326 runs on the board. Joe Root slammed an unbeaten 63 to guide England to a comfortable victory by chasing down the target of 205 runs with ease.

In Rawalpindi, Bangladesh produced one of their finest Test performances to stun Pakistan in their own backyard. Mohammad Rizwan’s 171 and Saud Shakeel’s 141 helped Pakistan post a strong total of 448/6 (declared) in their first innings. However, Bangladesh responded brilliantly with some resolute batting as they rode on Mushfiqur Rahim’s 191 to post 565 runs on the board in their first innings.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s 4-fer and Shakib Al Hasan’s 3-wicket haul helped Bangladesh skittle out the hosts for a paltry 146 runs in their 2nd innings and set up an easy win for the visitors. With the win, Bangladesh jumped to the sixth spot on the WTC points table while Pakistan slipped to the 8th spot. England moved to the 4th spot after their win against Sri Lanka.
