New Delhi: Rohan Jaitley, the current president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) is reportedly the favourite to take over as the new secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) if Jay Shah steps down from the post to become the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). As per multiple reports, Shah is all but set to succeed Greg Barclay as the new ICC chairman.
A report in Hindi Daily Dainik Bhaskar has claimed that Jaitley might replace Shah as the new BCCI secretary once the 35-year-old takes over the top post at ICC. As per the report, DDCA president Jaitley is leading the race to become the new BCCI secretary after Shah. Jaitley, a lawyer by profession, is the son of late BJP leader Arun Jaitley. He took over as DDCA president in 2023.
Meanwhile, Shah is set to replace Barclay, who has already confirmed that he won’t be seeking a third term after his current term ends on November 30. New Zealand’s Barclay was eligible for a third term in the top post but his decision to step down paved the way for Shah to become the new ICC chairman. The current BCCI secretary reportedly has backing from the likes of England and Australia.
August 27 is the last date for the current 16 ICC directors to apply for the chairman post. The winner will have to win the majority of the 16 votes in the election to win and take over as the new chairman. The winner will require at least 9 of the total 16 votes to gain the majority. Shah is expected to comfortably win the election as he enjoys good rapport among all members.
Jay Shah set to become youngest ICC chairman
If he manages to succeed Barclay successfully, Shah will become the youngest ICC chairman at the age of 35. He will become only the fifth Indian after the likes of Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N. Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar to become the ICC chairman. Shah is currently the BCCI-appointed ICC director and is also the chairman of the ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs sub-committee. He is also the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) apart from being the secretary of the BCCI.
