Revisit the scene: When Sanju Samson took Lahiru Kumara to cleaners, smashed 3 sixes in a over

New Delhi: Sanju Samson’s flamboyance with the bat is not a hidden aspect of his personality from his avid supporters. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter is understood to play an anchor’s role, although its redundant in the modern-day game of T20 cricket.

But Sanju Samson is a good reader of the game and just like many greats he does wait for the right opportunity to unleash the big hits and control the pace of his innings. It is one of the rare skills batters of his quality acquire in today’s time when the ask is to maximise the runs with ample of boundaries.

There is no doubt a section of Indian cricket team supporters believe that Samson hasn’t received enough opportunities with the potential he promises to. But when he gets them, the Kerala lad ensures to make it count.

Samson was part of India’s T20I squad during the Sri Lanka home series in 2022. In the second of the three-match series, India were set to chase a decent target of 184 in Dharamsala.

The carnage

Samson walked into bat at No.4 inside the powerplay after the departure of Ishan Kishan. He struggled to connect the ball in the initial phase and got a reprieve in the 10th over. He scored 14 off 16 balls and then 17 off 19 balls. It was only the 13th over of the chase that turned the tide around for the Indian middle order batter.

Sri Lankan pacer Lahiru Kumara was brought back into the attack after his first spell in the powerplay overs. Samson welcomed him with a boundary after finding a thick inside-edge of his bat. It followed with back-to-back sixes – one over the bowler’s head and other over covers.

The Indian gloveman launched the third one magnificently, apparently a no-look shot, sailing straight into the stand for his third six of the over. The fun ended after Binura Fernando completed a breathtaking catch on the final ball to dismiss Samson, who smashed 22 runs in the 23-run over (a wide conceded by the bowler).

India eventually won by seven wickets with 17 balls to spare thanks to splendorous knocks from Shreyas Iyer (74*) and Ravindra Jadeja (45*). But Samson’s cameo was a thrill to watch until it lasted.
